Safety and Security
Personnel protection and security presents opportunity for application of modern sensor technology. Instrumentation may be used to augment human senses and decision process where safety is a concern.

SELECTED PROJECTS

** A SCHOOL BUS WARNING device selectively energizes roadside warning signs in the vicinity of stopped school busses. As a bus passes critical locations, an electronic trigger mounted in the bus activates lights on signs as the bus passes. The activated signs along the route remain active for a pre-programmed time to warn approaching motorists. Studies indicate improved motorist attention to signs which are energised only under hazardous situationsas opposed to those which become part of the background. Signs are solar powered and require no maintenance. A similar device mounted on vehicles in industrial compounds activates warning lights in a set radius when vehicles (such as forklifts)are present.

** A DRIVEWAY SENSOR warns drivers exiting driveways located on blind curves or near the crests of hills of approaching unseen traffic. A receiver in the car receives a signal from a transmitter which "looks" around blind corners or barriers to warn drivers of approaching vehicles.

** A REMOTE ALARMING FIRE DETECTOR transmits an audible (or visual) alarm at a distance (300 meters)from a fire or smoke detector to protect outbuildings, barns or inaccessible locations. The units have been typically employed by neighbors to mutually monitor homes during vacations or extended absence or for early detection of barn fires.

** CHILD MONITOR transmitter alarms at a remote receiver if children stray outside a pre-set radius. The unit also alarms if a child falls into water deeper than 24 inches. The unit has a failsafe design (<.2% false alarms), tamperproof, and is lightweight. Excellent around pools, shopping malls, the beach or at crowded sports events.

** A "SMART" POOL MONITOR alarms on a pager (up to 1/4 mile) if a child breeches a security barrier or falls into a pool unnoticed. Not activated by waves or other surface disturbances.

** A "VIRTUAL FENCE" emits signals a pager if a child wanders beyond a set boundary created by a buried wire (irregular shape) or a small transmitter worn by the child (variable radius).

** A REMOTE SAFETY BEACON transmitter fitted to FORK LIFTS and other vehicles autonatically energises warning strobes within a set distance when these vehicles are operational. This system provies and ACTIVE warning ONLY when hazards are present and results in improved attentiveness.

** A 'MAN DOWN" monitor was developed for use in a large oil storage facility. Reduced manpower required employees to perform inspections alone, creating concern for injury or illness when empoyees were sent solo to remote facility locations.
We developed an automatic signal device which sends an alert to a central control room if personnel remain motionless for a predetermined period, assume a prone position (as in an injury), or activate a panic switch. Special active time-out features complete a fail-safe function to minimize time to locate a fallen individual. A similar device was designed for law enforcement in situations where visual contact could not be maintained between a control point and personnel. A homing transmitter may be added for expedited location of fallen personnel.
